SONIA GIAVITTO'S ART
Margherita Ciampaglia
Totems both archaic and futuristic, Portals emanating a sacred aura, meta-temporal "stargates" which set the visitor in fiont of broad and deep dimensions of the unconscious; essential and simplified characters, emerging from the reflection of the archetypal "couple", strongly allusive to the complex dynamics which elapse between the masculine and the feminine.
These are the figurative elements which inhabit the interior and artistic world of Sonia Giavitto, roman painter and sculptress. In Rome, Giavitto attends the Liceo Artistico Statale in via Ripetta, during Luigi Montanarini's headmastership, where she receives her formation: some of her teachers are artists like Mario Cimarra, Irma Costa and Nino Cordio. After graduating in high school, she attends the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Rome, where she attends with enthusiasm the course in decoration held by Sante Monachesi and the course in engraving held by Lino Banchi Barriviera. Then she enrols in Architecture. But it's the experience with an engraver of such depth as Banchi Barriviera that gives the turn of the screw for the definite individuation, from inside the roman artist, of a distinctive and decisive feature that she shows in a significant number of paintings on various materials ( canvas, cardboard, linen). Alongside the pictorial side, the sculptural aspect consolidates through a first core of works that feels the effect of the academic influence, but sooner they break out of the canonical westem cultural hangovers towards a new informal consciousness, and that feels the effect that the world and the spirituality of the Eastern cultures have on the artist, authentic researcher. Experimentation, in the last years, of various techniques and above all of the various artistic languages allow her to identify her own stylistic code, with which the roman artist materializes, through her creations, the concept at the basis of her artistic vision, the concept of "primordial memory", that is a very ancient memory that is inside the man and in a special way in the artist, that more than everyone else is intimately linked with nature and in constant dialogue with it. The combinations she proposes, with extreme wisdom and confidence, between her favourite natural materials ( wood, terracotta, brass and copper) and plastic and metallic components, contribute in creating a meta-temporal atmosphere, suspended between an archaic past and a very actual future, where personal computers' motherboards transform into incredible backgrounds for her most recent sculptures. Sonia Giavitto conjugates the modem style born from figurativism with the essential lexis of a more formal vision. She has a vigour and a creative energy that can mould the material, reaching the synthesis of the concepts that inspire her art, through a plastic archaism tinged with an absolute severity and rigour in the shapes. The artist feels the need to permit to her spectators to undertake a journey through the meanders of the unconscious and the memory, and to help them to contact their deepest and authentic emotions. Her extremely strong artistic nature permits her to mould the matter and make it alive with her vivid colourism, in which the dominant tones are the shades of brown, red and black, and so, from the deepest part of the observer, previous lives reminiscences emerge, past worlds or parallel to our normal life echoes, remembering constantly our link with Memory and Nature as the true substratum of the soul, and it's definitely and solidly linked with Art and being an artist. Sonia Giavitto lives in Tarquinia, where she's been living for over a decade, and where she dedicates herself completely to her activity as a sculptress. A long and exclusive collaboration with the "Associazione Italiana Sahaja Joga" has left her the chance to express her creativity in the creation of in backgrounds and costumes for plays organized by the Association, where she was able to undertake many collaborations with international artists. Many of her creations are exposed in private collections, both in Italy and abroad. In august 2000 the Cultural department of the County of Fermo promoted her first exposition, called "Percorsi di scultura" ,exhibited in the Sala della Colonna of the town hall. At the moment she's working on her first public assignment, a civic monument dedicated to Giordano Bruno, which will be placed in via Moranti, in the town of Montegranaro (Ascoli Piceno), at the same time she's realising a video-perfomance on the Alchemical Portals, and an advertising space for an American sponsor.
